Farmhouse and Sunrise...

Hi there

Today I'm really glad I've finished up with my Farmhouse String Quilt

Not that it was really very difficult, I just had so many things to finish at the same time...
Not all of them quilting related...

This is the finished top... now to remove all that paper and then think of how I want the FMQ...

I've also made a few more landscape styled string quilts...
Each measures 40" (102cm)

This is the Beach Sunrise string quilt and the yet unfinished design
of the Summer House string quilt. As soon as each is finished they will
be going to my Craftsy shop.

I've started a QuiltArt Designs Group  on Facebook where you are welcome to join and add any of your finished blocks made with the QADesigns patterns. Please show us what you've made, I really love to see them all.

Almost there....

Hi there everyone...

I've been so busy these past few days with preparations for my daughter's wedding. Sometimes its all the small things that seem to take all your time... but I must say we've been having a load of fun too...

The Farmhouse String Quilt is almost done....
I really have to be finished by the week-end..... I just don't have any more time for it than that... and I'm loving it, so I really can't leave it...

When we started - this was what we had. The idea for a string quilt, but with a 'picture' going on as well... and the Farmhouse was born...

This is my work in progress...

I've sewn all the rows together, but left a portion un-sewn on the rows where I will still attach the 6 blocks that make up the house and barn.

I'm really loving this project - I didn't even have to cut into a large piece of fabric. I have boxes with the scraps, so this was perfect for it.

The house and barn will be done in between everything going on here, plus the laundry....(rolling eyes...)

I love to see the pattern or the picture of something starting to form as I join the sections.

Here's a look at the finished top from Magdalena Alge from the UAE.
Its absolutely amazing! love it!

Each one of the quilts has such beautiful use of the scraps and strips.

Farmhouse wip...

Today I'm going on with the Farmhouse String quilt progress.

I've sewn up the first few rows but the house and barn will be last... Im really itching to do them, so that will make me finish the other blocks quicker....

I'm hoping to be finished on the bottom 2 rows and then sew up the larger sections by the week-end.

This is the finished quilt top by Diane Kelley. Its so beautiful! Love it!!

Then on another front - some news on the patterns too...

This is the Elefriends pattern. I've changed the size down to 24x36" (62x92cm).
The large size was just too much for people to sew.....

The Cats on Quilts also got a new friend....

This is Cat on a Quilt #1 (24x30")

and the new Cat on a Quilt #2 (40")
This one has a secondary pattern with the perspective lines showing.

and for the dog lovers..... a sweet face Border Collie.... (30x36")
All the new patterns have been sent off to my Craftsy shop.

I've started a QuiltArt Designs Group  on Facebook where you are welcome to join and add any of your finished blocks made with the QADesigns patterns. Please show us what you've made, I really love to see them all.

Farmhouse Friday

Hello everyone...

I hope you're all enjoying the process of the Farmhouse string quilt

The sorting out of the pattern pieces and the strips does take time, BUT you will have it really easy for the rest of the sewing part - you will see....

Like I said, I'm going to leave the house and barn part until last and get all the other easy blocks done because I don't have much time to finish this quilt.

I forgot I need to start sewing my Art Quilt piece for the Art with Fabric Hop in May.... so after jumping up and down and having a bit of a hissy fit, I decided to get things finished a lot quicker....

You can take your time on this Farmhouse - no problem, but you will see that its really not very hard to do and goes rather quickly anyway.

Here's the rows 1 - 4 I've finished so far ...

I think I found something out about myself with this quilt. I don't really like to be very 'improv' with my selection of fabrics, so I have to almost close my eyes and use my finger and point to something and that's the one I'm going with.... I really struggle with just do anything when it comes to the fabric selection....

How did you guys get along with your fabric selections?

Here's a quick look at a photo from Magdalena Alge. She's working in the UAE.

This is really shaping up! Love the vibrant look of the sky.

You're more than welcome to still join in and have some fun along with us...
You can find the pattern in my Craftsy shop right HERE....<<<<<

Wednesday update...

Hi there everyone...

Here's some of the progress on the Farmhouse String Quilt qal....

I've managed to make 2 and a half rows of the pattern so far...
Really easy, really quick too...

The prep work of putting everything into alphabetical order is really handy now. I can just grab the next section and start a new block. I'm not concentrating on the whole quilt, just block by block - and the great thing is that these lines and strings don't even need to match up when sewing the rows together.....

Just something for those who are new to paper piecing or my patterns.

This layout guide (below) I give with the pattern, is to show each section in a different colour but in its 'block'. Its a front view of the quilt.

When you're sewing the finished rows together, you need to be looking at the paper side and then this guide will be the wrong way round. The design guide will show you how the placement needs to be done.

To sew the rows - piece A will be on your right hand side and the line will go towards your left hand side. Once flipped over to the fabrics, it will show correctly....

I've decided to keep the 6 blocks with the house and barn until last, so those 3 blocks from row 3 and 4 will wait until everything else is done. The rows 1 and 2 went quickly and rows 5 - 8 will be the same, then I can just finish up those 6 blocks and sew the rows together.

You can find the pattern in my Craftsy shop right HERE....<<<<<

April Quilt A Long - Farmhouse String Quilt

Hi there everyone....

It's already April and (rubbing hands together) its the start of the
  Farmhouse String Quilt QAL....

I've been really excited to get this one started...

This is the 40" (102cm) Farmhouse String Quilt.
Its on the easy level and could even be used by beginners who have an idea of what paper piecing is all about.

With this String Quilt, you can use up scraps of fabric you have that are too small for something but don't really want to just throw it out.
Each of the blocks that make up a row are 5" (12,7cm), so your strips and scraps only need to be around that size in length.

This is the Farmhouse without all colour scraps. It has been divided into blues, light greens, dark greens, yellow greens, browns, and red.

This works for all the colours but say - For the blues - there will only be one number for blue but you can use any colour blue fabric you choose. You can be totally random or you can even stick to your own plan.

Here's a layout plan (shows a front view of the quilt), you will see that I divided it up into rows.
Each row has 8 blocks.

You can join your rows from the start or you can wait until you have a few rows made before joining.

The first two rows are very straight forward as well as the rows 5 - 8.

The rows 3 and 4 are the only two where there are small pieces around the house and barn but nothing extreme. You can even wait until last to tackle that portion.

When joining your blocks - be careful to have the paper side facing you when following the instructions.

I've decided to make all the rows first before I join them, so I'm working through each block and looking at the section colour box and if it says blue, I grab a piece of blue, if it says white, then that's the direction I go.

When I lay out the rows, this is what I'm looking at....
For the blues I decided they all had to fall into the lighter blue colour group, but other than that I'm having loads of fun and it's going pretty quickly.

Here's one on a more advanced stage. It belongs to Jan from Sew Surprising...

Already looking amazing!!!

You can use up any colour scrap you have. Mix up the solids and the patterns and you're going to be surprised with the really cool quilt you've made.

Anyone can join the QAL..... I get asked this question so many times.....all you need to do is go and buy your pattern and start. No sign up, no sign up fee (unless you really want to....lol...)

With start - I mean cutting out all the pieces, then putting them in piles of alphabetical numbering. As I'm cutting I already make those piles. A - Z, AA - AZ, BA - BZ etc... then each of those piles of papers gets sorted into alphabetical order. Believe me, this does help in the long run.
Next is to get your fabric scraps and sort them into blues, greens etc.
Then grab the A block and get going...
